A first time for everything: Plus Berlin Hostels & Hotel Review

Plus Hostel Berlin

There is a first time for everything.

While I’m an experienced traveler, what a lot of people don’t know is that I am moreso an experienced business traveler. I have toted my cameras all over the world and have never really reflected my work in my blogging or photography but the reality is, for the last 13-odd years, I have traveled almost exclusively, and super-extensively, for business. This means … get ready for it …

I have never actually stayed in a hostel.  In my life. That is until Berlin.

I’ve been in Berlin, one of the trendiest Euro-cities I know, for the last 7 days, taking in the vast and mind-boggling ITB conference and trade fair where all the world’s travel industry meets, presents and collaborates. This includes the ever-expanding work that this industry is doing with bloggers.  The clever marketing mind behind Plus Berlin Hostel & Hotel extended a lovely offer to several of these social media types, myself included, to stay at the artful and industrial Plus Berlin Hostel on Warschauer Platz during the conference.  For one week, I found my home at tweet-central, with other like-minded bloggers where I could sufficiently work, geek-out and talk travel without shame.

I had done my research before arriving and was pretty sure, despite my lack of hosteling experience, that Plus Hostel was not DSCN4517the usual suspect. Upon arrival I realised a modern art gallery meets trattoria meets hotel meets community. The rooms range from shared dorm rooms to private hotel rooms and are pretty standard; everything appears clean and bright, edgy and artful.  The staff is young, friendly, full of energy, largely Italian and very multi-lingual.

The meeting time & place seemed to be in the morning, at the Opera bar & restaurant located in the back of the building, where a small but reasonable breakfast buffet is served and the day is started off right. Opera also offers an Italian menu where vast amounts of wine, pizza and pasta are shared in a boisterous and happy atmosphere daily.

While some of the bloggers suffered a few to no bars of wi-fi reception in the rooms, the restaurant and bar as well as large recreation & lounge area on the 3rd floor, made for great communal places to work, tweet, write and edit. And the sauna and pool made an even better place to recover from the many previous nights out on the city.

In the midst of all this, is something unexpected: a courtyard complete with murals, sculptures and an artist’s studio where several artists in residence work at all hours: creating, cutting, painting, pasting, shaping.  The vast corridors of this industrial building (and I mean VAST!) surrounding the courtyard are adorned with some of the hippest artwork around adding to the atmosphere and providing inspiration.

So, Plus Hostels has completely changed my outdated and inexperienced perception of hosteling; offering me a fresh look at the high-end of budget accommodation (this not an oxymoron anymore!) and the trendy-end of travel and community. Thanks, Plus!

Plus Berlin Hostel & Hotel kindly sponsored my stay, however all thoughts, enthusiasm and photos are my own.
