Vancouver: Cool Conference City

by in business trips, canada, vancouver

The last 6 weeks saw me taking in conference after conference after conference here in the beautiful city of Vancouver. Needless to say I met a lot of people and learned a few things along the way.

Northern Voice (#nv11) kicked off my conference tour in the lovely, light and linear Life Sciences Centre at the University of British Columbia. This is where the local blogging scene comes together each spring to share, teach and discuss all the elements of personal blogging and social media. My very good friend, Alison Wonderland, made the trip from Medicine Hat and summed up her conference experience here.

A couple weeks later I found myself attending the NAFSA 2011 (#nafsa11) conference at the state-of-the-art, super-green and very pleasant Vancouver Convention Centre. The annual NAFSA conference is a gathering of nearly 9,000 international education professionals from all over the world. An international exhibition accompanied by seminars, workshops and countless receptions (and a few hockey games!), NAFSA aims to help schools and agents form partnerships and share ideas on the future of the industry, professional development, international student recruitment and services, visa issues and all things education related.

Finally I wrapped up my conferencing, again at the Vancouver Convention Centre, this time with the international Travel Blog Exchange (#tbex). This rounded out my conference education and networking nicely especially as I consider myself a travel photoblogger. TBEX was a wonderful meeting of like-minded people, sharing the love of travel, writing and photography (and a again a few more hockey games). The absolute highlight for me was hearing the sage Journeywoman, Evelyn Hannon, speak. She reminded all of us to stay true to ourselves and that traveling can be a wonderful healer of heartache and a catalyst for a brilliant, adventurous future.
